Care Farm has launched

We are now open to taking farm helpers every Tuesday. We have had a farm helper for 3 weeks and 2 more helpers on the way.  It is great to have started and we have enjoyed our days working together. This week we have planted a new lawn so we will have somewhere to sit and eat outside next to our meeting rooms. The vegetables are growing nicely. The tomatoes we planted 3 weeks ago have settled in and even have some fruit.  We are grateful to people who have kindly donated things;  this week, we have taken delivery of a cooker and a picnic bench. These will make a great difference. There is lots to do but we are excited by our new venture.

Wildlife Detectives

Despite a terrible weather forecast, we had a very successful activity day during school half term. Our forays into the field margins were still interesting; the children found lots of different bugs, flies, moths, small crickets and beetles. In the woodpiles and muddy areas, they found 6 different types of snail and many different kinds of slugs, centipedes millipedes and ground beetles.
However, the highlight of our forays was pond dipping. Every scoop of the net contained dragonfly nymphs and various other pond animals – whirligig beetles, snails, back swimmers, pond skaters, and even 2 newt larvae which we quickly returned to the pond. This is quite a new pond and so it was thrilling to see it so full of life.
The piglets were very excited to be fed and stroked by the children and they are now called Rosie and Rupert.
It was a pleasure to have such an enthusiastic group of children on the farm. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Wick Grange Care Farm Open Day

Thank you to everybody who came to our open day.  It was great to have such a positive reaction to our new venture.  It was interesting to meet everybody and to get some feedback about what facility people would like to use.  Hopefully we can now progress to having some farm helpers… What this space!

New Arrivals

Today I went to Cardinal Wiseman School to pick up 2 cute Tamworth/Gloucester Old Spot piglets...  They are only 8 weeks old, and having just had their vaccinations, are ready to go out into the field.

The piglets had not been in the field for 5 minutes when they managed to find a way out of the fence!  They are so small that they managed to fit through the wire mesh!  Time for plan B - an electric fence.... Hours later and several rescues from our neighbour's garden, they are settled in for the night.   They have been leaping about the field like lambs and rooting around in the clover. - It won't take long before they will have turned this lush green field into mud!

The swallows are building their nests

The swallows are nesting again in the attic of our meeting rooms.  They are busy repairing their old nest and making a lot of noise.

Easter Activities

Our Easter activity days were a great success.  The children enjoyed handling the chicks and bottle feeding a lamb. They decorated white duck eggs by dyeing them with onion skins and pretty leaves.  Their attempts at making birds nests looked very good even if they were not as intricately made as the thrush and blackbird nests!

New Chicks!

Our new chicks have arrived!

21 balls of black fluff arrived in a box!  They are getting used to their new home and tweeting away merrily.
